How to Build a Brand Presence on Reddit
Jul 8, 2025
Brands pay us $$$ to launch their Reddit organic strategy. Here's the exact 8-step playbook I give 90% of them for their first 90 days:
The First 90 Days:
1️⃣ Go claim your brand usernames and Subreddit
Do this ASAP. Account age & onboarding speed matters.
→ Secure any usernames you'll need (start with "[Company Name]" and "[Company Name]_[Your Name]")
→ Claim "r/[Company Name]" (even if you don't plan to use it)
→ Verify your identity and fill out your bio ASAP
2️⃣ Do your homework
We have a whole process for doing this - DM me if you're having trouble
→ Find out what's being said about you and your competitors
→ Analyze the content coming up in your target Subreddits and for target Keywords
→ Align on how you want your brand to show up in Search and answer engines
3️⃣ Get your account to 50 Karma ASAP
Most Subreddits you'll want to be seen in will filter out Comments from new and low Karma accounts. Get yourself over that hump before you do anything else.
→ Start Commenting on existing Threads in general Subreddits (pet & celeb Subreddits have lax rules, so start there)
→ Try posting a few Threads in big general Subreddits like r/AskReddit when you hit 25 Karma (if one gets traction, that should get you to 50)
4️⃣ Manage past Brand mentions
Go find every past Comment involving your brand name.
→ If the Thread is still unlocked, respond to criticism openheartedly (don't clap back) and thank your boosters graciously (adding useful context when appropriate)
5️⃣ Set up brand & non-brand Keyword alerts for future Threads
We don't know what Threads will rank for your keywords 6 months from now - all we can do is make sure you're everywhere when they do.
→ Get on Reddit Pro and set up Keyword alerts (start narrow and expand until you can't keep up or keyword relevance starts to dip)
6️⃣ Start checking your target Subreddit(s) daily
If you have high Product-Community Fit (i.e. a CRM software and a marketing Subreddit like r/marketing), make it your mission to become as enmeshed with the community as possible
→ Read, learn, absorb. This knowledge will soon pay for itself.
7️⃣ Start leaving valuable, thoughtful Comments
The goal here is to focus on improving the lives of your target customer as much as you can. Now is the time to give.
8️⃣ Follow the 3 Commandments of Brand Commenting
Redditors hate marketing-speak and know when they're being sold to. At most, reference that you work for a company that does X, and the curious can click your username to find out more.
→ Write from the first person
→ Write like a human
→ Do not promote your business directly
You should be starting to notice some benefits after doing this for three months. With momentum on your side, you'll now have more options on the table to start driving direct attention your way, but more on that later.
