Working thesis
Flexcar had built its customer acquisition engine largely through paid digital and out-of-home media in its active markets. As the team expanded into awareness channels, it saw an opportunity to enter the conversations already shaping how people think about buying, leasing, and living with a car.
For the first six months, Flexcar and Karmic did that through a Community Engagement playbook on Reddit, participating in relevant Subreddits the brand did not own. That work proved the audience and the search opportunity were there, but it also exposed a structural limit: access depended on a small number of relevant communities, increasingly restrictive brand-participation rules, and moderator enforcement the team could not control. Flexcar needed a more durable model built for the long term.
From there, we shifted focus toward building an owned space where people could ask questions, compare tradeoffs, share experiences, and discover a more flexible alternative to traditional ownership. A Flexcar Subreddit could turn market tension into searchable content, connect the product to real customer stories, and reveal which ideas pulled people into the category.
The problem
Flexcar offers month-to-month flexibility instead of the traditional path of buying, financing, or committing to a long-term lease. Before that model can make sense, buyers have to reconsider familiar assumptions about car payments, ownership costs, depreciation, and the value of flexibility.
For six months, Karmic helped Flexcar enter those conversations through Community Engagement in unowned Subreddits. The playbook proved that category-led Reddit content could earn attention and influence discovery: one Thread reached the first page of Google for “Flexcar,” one highly ranked comment appeared in nearly 60 tracked AI/search retrievals, and another prompted a direct message asking about month-to-month leasing.

The opportunity was clear, but the model was fragile. Reach depended on access to a small number of communities governed by anti-promotion rules, spam controls, and moderator discretion. Flexcar needed an owned destination where current information and useful conversations could accumulate into a durable audience and search asset.
“Previously, we tested Reddit direct response campaign ads, but they didn't deliver the results we were looking for, so we ultimately paused the campaign. Since partnering with Karmic and shifting our focus toward organic content and brand awareness, Reddit has become a much more valuable channel for us.”
— Kelly Conlin, Senior Marketing Manager at Flexcar
The strategic bet
After six months of Community Engagement, we helped Flexcar evolve its strategy by building r/FlexcarUSA as an owned Reddit surface—a durable place to participate in car-buying and leasing conversations, publish current information, and grow an audience Flexcar could engage over time.

This Thread generated 766,000 views in an unowned Subreddit.
The shift operationalized lessons learned while working in unowned communities. The Subreddit would host broader discussions about the economics, emotions, and frustrations of car ownership, then use those conversations to earn attention for Flexcar’s point of view and introduce the product in context (rather than attempt to turn every Thread into a direct pitch).
That meant prioritizing Threads about:
car-payment regret
depreciation
hidden ownership costs
lease-end decisions
personal finance tradeoffs
the gap between old car ownership logic and newer flexible-access models
The owned Subreddit gave Flexcar more control than relying only on outside communities, while still allowing Reddit-native discussion to create the real value.
The operating system
The program was run through a repeatable system:
Thread planning and review — Threads were drafted, reviewed, and approved before publishing.
Owned Subreddit publishing — r/FlexcarUSA became the destination for category-led discussions.
Paid promotion — Threads with strong engagement signals could be boosted to expand reach.
Weekly reporting — Performance was captured through weekly reports covering account metrics, subreddit growth, paid metrics, brand/web signals, and AI SEO signals.
Client feedback loop — Client feedback from Slack and calls shaped future content, including more Flexcar-forward content, customer review integration, and AMA planning.
What happened
Subreddit performance metrics cover a four-month period. Broader AI, search, and referral metrics cover a nine-month period.
1. Three early organic hits proved the model could work
Three early r/FlexcarUSA Threads generated 242,000 combined organic views while the Subreddit still had fewer than 20 Subscribers. That means the content was deemed valuable by Reddit’s organic algorithm and delivered to relevant users via their feed.
The three Threads approached the category from different angles—market instability, longer financial commitments, and personal regret—but all tapped into the tension surrounding traditional car ownership.

Over the four-month measurement period, the Subreddit reached weekly highs of 5,400 visitors and 18,300 page views.
The takeaway was stronger than “one post went viral.” Within its first month, the Subreddit proved that multiple category-led ideas could earn organic distribution without beginning as direct Flexcar promotion.
2. The best Threads were not ads. They were debates.
A later Thread, “Would you rather have a paid-off 10-year-old car, or a brand-new one with a payment?” generated 24,000 views, 17 upvotes, and 284 Comments.

The lesson: Flexcar’s strongest Reddit content did not begin with “Why Flexcar is great.” It began with a question people already had strong opinions about.
3. Reddit gave Flexcar a clearer content map
The program surfaced a sharper understanding of what people wanted to talk about:
financial burden
ownership regret
long-term commitment
hidden cost anxiety
the tradeoff between flexibility and perceived value
Beyond serving as content themes, these ideas emerged as key inputs for category education.
Subsequent weeks further showed that personal finance debates and legacy-versus-new ways of thinking about cars drove higher engagement than more brand-forward content.
4. Search visibility began validating the long game
The search result that helped trigger the pivot was not an isolated signal. Over the nine-month measurement period, AI share of voice improved by 12%, while AI search visibility improved by 17%.

Over the same nine-month period, the momentum extended beyond AI visibility. Weekly brand mentions rose from fewer than five in early 2026 to a peak of 23 and now regularly exceed 10. Weekly users referred by LLMs grew from roughly 75 to more than 200.

“We're also starting to see our Reddit content surface in AI generated responses, along with increased traffic from both Reddit and AI platforms.
That's been especially encouraging as we continue to focus on building brand awareness and reaching people who may not have previously considered us.”— Kelly Conlin, Senior Marketing Manager at Flexcar
Around three months after launch, the brand experienced a sustained increase in organic brand mentions and the Subreddit itself also began appearing for branded prompts.

The numbers were still early and volatile, but they suggested that useful Reddit content could continue surfacing in traditional and AI search well after publication. Owning the destination gave Flexcar a way to compound that visibility with current information instead of depending on old or locked Threads it could not update.
5. The Subreddit became a base for the next growth loop
By early September, Flexcar was already planning the next layer of the program:
integrate customer review content into Reddit posts
send customer lists for Reddit audience targeting
get subreddit or Thread links in front of existing customers through newsletter, SMS, or push
consider linking Reddit Threads in customer-facing communications instead of defaulting to blog posts
plan an AMA with a senior Flexcar leader when the timing was right
Around this time, we also began to see community members move beyond Commenting on Flexcar’s published Threads and start publishing Threads of their own.

r/FlexcarUSA is already drawing in prospects who want to know more about Flexcar before buying
The ambition is to build the Subreddit beyond a publishing surface. It is becoming infrastructure that Flexcar can plug into other channels.
“Reddit has become a more intentional part of our broader organic and brand strategy. We're thinking more about how people discover Flexcar through community discussions, search, and AI platforms, and how we can participate in those conversations in a way that feels authentic.”
— Kelly Conlin, Senior Marketing Manager at Flexcar
Why this is working
The content used to build r/FlexcarUSA has created engagement because it was built around category tension, not brand vanity.

Composite view of the Flexcar Subreddit
Flexcar’s owned Subreddit gave the team a place to repeatedly test the beliefs behind the buying decision:
owning a car feels safe, but may be financially irrational
a new car feels exciting, but creates commitment and depreciation risk
monthly flexibility can be valuable, but people need to compare it against the true cost of ownership
Reddit is unusually good for this kind of belief work because users do not politely consume the message. They argue with it, add stories, challenge assumptions, and reveal the objections that matter.
