Brand Subreddit
Definition
A subreddit named after a company (for example, r/Fitbit) and moderated by it, giving the brand community-level control over rules, content, and moderation while remaining subject to Reddit's sitewide policies. Also called a branded or owned subreddit.
Context
Owning a subreddit reduces third-party moderator risk but does not remove platform risk: Reddit can still restrict accounts, content, or entire communities. The main failure mode is the product shrine; a healthy brand subreddit leaves room for the broader decisions and experiences customers share. Brands should reserve their brand-name subreddit even before they are ready to build there.
Relevance to Reddit
A brand subreddit is the durable alternative to building on land someone else controls. Karmic recommends one for most established brands and for newer companies still settling their direction: because subreddit names cannot be changed, a community named after the brand survives pivots in product, category, or positioning. It also gives customers an obvious home and gives criticism an official venue where the team can respond visibly.
