Definition
A response posted within a Reddit thread, either replying to the original post or to another comment. Comments form nested, threaded discussions and are independently voteable. They can be sorted by Top, New, Best, or Controversial within any given thread.
Context
Reddit's comment ranking uses a Bayesian averaging approach (the Wilson score interval) designed to surface comments with consistently high vote ratios, not just the most upvoted comments. A comment with 100 upvotes and 0 downvotes ranks higher than one with 1,000 upvotes and 500 downvotes — quality consistency is rewarded over raw popularity.
Relevance to Reddit
Comments are often the highest-ROI participation format for brand marketers. A genuinely useful comment in a high-traffic thread reaches thousands of buyers in an active research moment without requiring top-level posting permissions. The comment section is also where brand reputation is made or damaged most visibly — supportive and critical responses accumulate in public view.
