Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior
Definition
A violation of Reddit's Content Policy in which multiple accounts or people act in concert to artificially influence vote counts, content visibility, or perceived community sentiment — including coordinated upvote rings, organized posting campaigns, and off-platform coordination to manipulate Reddit content.
Context
Reddit's enforcement of coordinated inauthentic behavior increased significantly after high-profile political manipulation cases. The platform now uses behavioral pattern analysis to detect coordination even when originating from different IP addresses. Reddit publishes periodic transparency reports disclosing coordinated manipulation campaigns it has identified and removed.
Relevance to Reddit
One of the highest-risk compliance categories for brands. Well-intentioned programs can trigger this violation: organizing employees to upvote company posts, running referral programs that incentivize Reddit activity, or seeding multiple accounts to simulate organic advocacy. Program design must explicitly exclude any form of coordinated engagement.
