Engagement Bait
Definition
A post designed primarily to provoke comments or upvotes through vague, emotionally charged, or open-ended framing rather than to contribute genuine value to the community. Often used covertly for market research or to build post visibility.
Context
Reddit's September 2025 algorithm update explicitly deprioritized posts generating high comment volume with low engagement quality — including the shallow agreement comments that engagement bait typically produces. The algorithm now weights comment depth and substantive discussion, further penalizing bait-style content at the delivery level as well as the moderation level.
Relevance to Reddit
Reddit communities and moderators have become adept at identifying and removing engagement bait. Brands posting open-ended questions purely to drive engagement — without contributing real value — risk removal, community criticism, and moderator scrutiny of the account broadly.
