Karma Farming

>

Reddit Platform

Definition

The practice of deliberately accumulating Reddit karma through high-engagement, low-effort content — such as posting popular memes, obvious questions, or recycled content — to build account credibility before shifting the account to promotional use.

Context

Reddit's moderation community and automated systems have become increasingly sophisticated at identifying karma farming patterns — accounts with very high karma in meme or low-effort subreddits followed by sudden pivots to commercial content are a recognized pattern. This does not mean avoiding high-karma communities entirely, but karma building should be done in communities relevant to the brand's intended participation areas.

Relevance to Reddit

Karma farming as a brand account strategy is fundamentally misaligned with Reddit's purpose and will not produce the right foundation for genuine community participation. Karma built through value-add contributions in relevant communities is strategically superior — it creates actual relationships, community familiarity, and contextually appropriate account history. Farmed karma on unrelated content does not satisfy moderator scrutiny.
