Definition
The behavior of reading and consuming Reddit content without posting, commenting, or voting. Research consistently shows the majority of Reddit's user base lurks at any given moment — consuming without contributing publicly.
Context
Reddit has historically estimated approximately 90% of users are lurkers at any given session. The lurker-majority dynamic is one reason Reddit's true audience reach is significantly larger than visible engagement metrics suggest. It also explains why Reddit content that earns strong AI citation or search ranking delivers outsized brand influence relative to its apparent engagement numbers.

Lurkers are a systematically underestimated audience segment. Most Reddit performance metrics capture only the active minority. A post with 500 upvotes may be read by 10,000–50,000 lurking readers.
