Parasite SEO

Reddit Culture

Definition

A tactic where operators insert brand links or product mentions into existing high-ranking Reddit threads — particularly dormant ones — to capture organic search traffic without creating original content. Typically executed through undisclosed or fake accounts.

Context

The term 'parasite SEO' extends beyond Reddit to describe using high-authority third-party domains (Reddit, Quora, Wikipedia, YouTube) to rank for keywords an operator cannot rank for on their own domain. Reddit is a common target because of its domain authority and volume of indexed content. As of 2025, Reddit's moderation systems have become significantly more effective at detecting and removing Parasite SEO activity at scale.

Relevance to Reddit

Parasite SEO is prohibited and increasingly detectable by Reddit's moderation systems and community members. Undisclosed link insertion violates FTC endorsement disclosure requirements. Short-term search visibility gains do not justify the compliance and reputational exposure this tactic creates.
