Reddit Ads

Definition

A paid ad unit formatted identically to an organic Reddit post, appearing natively in subreddit feeds and the home feed. Labeled 'Promoted,' these ads support text, images, video, or external links. Users can upvote, downvote, and comment on Promoted Posts exactly as they would organic content.

Context

Reddit's September 2025 algorithm update evaluates Promoted Posts using the same engagement-quality signals as organic content — comment depth, sentiment, and cross-community sharing. Ads generating substantive discussion receive preferential delivery; ads generating shallow engagement see suppression. Creative quality has become a distribution variable, not merely a brand consideration.

Relevance to Reddit

The core creative unit of Reddit paid media. Promoted Posts that feel indistinguishable from high-quality organic Reddit content consistently outperform polished advertising creative. Genuine upvotes earned by a Promoted Post extend its organic reach and lower effective cost-per-engaged-user beyond what CPC metrics capture.
