Definition
Reddit's private direct messaging feature allowing users to exchange real-time chat messages one-to-one or in group chat rooms. Separate from the older Reddit private message system, which operates asynchronously.
Context
Reddit Chat was introduced in 2017 as a more real-time alternative to Reddit's original asynchronous private message system. Both systems currently coexist. Reddit Chat supports direct messages between users and community-level chat rooms within subreddits — some communities use subreddit chat rooms as a more informal supplement to the public post and comment feed.
Relevance to Reddit
Reddit Chat is occasionally relevant for brand relationship management. Moderators may use Chat to follow up on Mod Mail conversations. Community members who engage positively with brand content sometimes initiate direct conversations via Chat. Brand accounts should monitor Chat alongside the Inbox and respond to direct messages with the same quality and promptness as public comments.
