Self-Serve Advertising
Definition
Reddit's model of advertising accessible to any advertiser directly through the Reddit Ads Manager platform, without requiring a sales team relationship or minimum spend commitment. Contrasts with Reddit's managed/direct-sold premium placements.
Context
Reddit introduced its first self-serve ad platform in 2009. The platform has undergone multiple significant rebuilds since then. The current self-serve system supports the full range of targeting options, creative formats, and measurement tools — capabilities that were previously only available through direct Reddit sales relationships.
Relevance to Reddit
Self-serve is the right starting point for most brands — it allows full creative control, flexible budgets (minimum $5/day), and real-time optimization. Graduate to managed placements (Takeover Ads, Brand Lift Studies) only after validating performance with self-serve spend at a sufficient scale.
