Topical Subreddit
Definition
A subreddit a company creates and moderates around a problem, identity, or niche its customers care about (for example, r/FitnessTracking) rather than around the company's name. It is the alternative to a Brand Subreddit.
Context
Once a topical community has a name, audience, and posting history, changing its subject means starting over. Karmic advises new companies uncertain about their future to avoid this route, and advises any brand choosing it to claim its own brand-name subreddit separately.
Relevance to Reddit
A Topical Subreddit can build category influence beyond immediate brand visibility, but it is only a good choice when the niche is underserved on Reddit, can support at least 50 useful thread ideas that do not promote the product, and will still matter if the company's roadmap changes.
