Vote Manipulation
Definition
The act of artificially inflating or suppressing vote counts on Reddit posts or comments through multiple accounts, automated bots, external coordination, or incentivized voting. Explicitly prohibited by Reddit's Content Policy.
Context
Reddit applies vote fuzzing to displayed counts partly as a manipulation countermeasure — by obscuring the true count, it makes manipulation harder to verify and therefore less incentivized. The underlying true vote count is still used for ranking, but what is displayed is intentionally imprecise, creating uncertainty for anyone attempting to measure manipulation accuracy.
Relevance to Reddit
Reddit's anti-abuse systems detect vote manipulation through behavioral pattern analysis, IP clustering, and account relationship mapping. Brands that purchase upvotes, coordinate employee voting, or create account networks face bans, public exposure, and legal risk under FTC endorsement guidelines. The short-term visibility gain is never proportionate to the compliance risk.
