People keep asking for my take on Reddit's ChatGPT citation dip. I waited for the dust to settle before weighing in, partly because the first week of coverage was mostly reaction, and partly because I wanted enough weeks of our own client data to say something specific.
I run a Reddit agency, so I've spent the past few years watching how Reddit conversations influence buyers, search results and AI answers. From that perspective, here’s how it looks to me: marketers calling this an 86% dip in Reddit's value are confusing the distribution layer with the underlying asset. For a CMO deciding where budget goes, the ChatGPT citation dip isn't nearly enough reason to reallocate resources away from Reddit.
What happened to Reddit's citations in ChatGPT?
In mid-August 2026, Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a steady 3.83% to an average of 0.52% (an 86.4% relative drop) according to AI visibility platform Promptwatch.
Over the same window, Reddit's citation share fell about 11% in Google AI Overviews and about 30% in Google AI Mode, with no clear drop in Perplexity, according to Axios and Trackerly.
That split is the most telling part of the data. If Reddit's content had suddenly become less useful, every answer engine would have pulled back from it at once. Instead, Google's surfaces drifted and Perplexity held steady, while one engine changed how it credits sources and Reddit became its largest casualty. Promptwatch still calls the size of the drop provisional, and OpenAI hasn't publicly explained what changed.
Reading isn't the same as crediting
Despite the headlines, ChatGPT kept consulting Reddit throughout the citation drop. Trackerly, which records both the pages ChatGPT consults and the pages it cites, found that Reddit made up between 25% and 34% of consulted pages on every day of the dip, in line with July, before the drop. What did change was how often those Threads appeared as visible citations in ChatGPT’s answers.
Consulting isn't passive. OpenAI's documentation defines sources as the full list of pages the model consulted while forming its response, and citations as the smaller subset it chooses to show. A Reddit Thread in the sources list is part of the material the answer was built from, whether or not it gets a link. After studying 1.4 million prompts, Ahrefs concluded that ChatGPT "is using Reddit extensively to understand topics, gauge consensus, and build context," yet pages pulled through its dedicated Reddit channel were cited only 1.93% of the time.
What no tracker can measure is how much any single Thread shaped the final wording of an answer. Trackerly says as much: the Reddit pages are demonstrably in what ChatGPT reads, even when their exact influence isn't visible. August didn't create the gap between what ChatGPT uses and what it credits. It made the gap impossible to miss.
ChatGPT didn't stop reading Reddit. It changed how often it credits Reddit.
Has Reddit lost ChatGPT citations before?
Reddit lost most of its ChatGPT citations at least once before. Between early August and mid-September 2025, the share of ChatGPT responses citing Reddit fell from about 60% to about 10%, a drop analysts tied to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, according to Semrush. Within months Reddit had recovered, and by April 2026 it was ChatGPT's single most-cited domain, per Forbes.
Even after this year's drop, Surfer's count of 5.73 million ChatGPT citations in September 2026 still ranks reddit.com first, at a much smaller 0.74% share.
This time may be different. Trackerly points out that 2025 was a retrieval problem, while 2026 looks like a change in which retrieved pages get cited, and that there's no guarantee it reverses. Nobody outside OpenAI knows. The honest read here is that this is another possible bump in the road, with the outcome still open.
AI citations are volatile. Reddit's underlying value isn't.
What we saw across eight client brands
Across eight brands Karmic tracks in AI answers, the average Reddit retrieval rate fell 23.6% between late June–early August and mid-August–early October 2026, from 26.5% to 20.2%.
Over the same period, average brand visibility held steady, moving from 52.7% to 54.0%, and average brand share of voice rose from 50.8% to 56.4%, with all eight brands higher.
This isn't a rebuttal of Trackerly's numbers, but it is another angle on the same picture. Trackerly measured what ChatGPT reads across its customers' prompts. Our tracking covers prompts in our clients' categories, and it adds a question the headlines skipped: when buyers ask AI about the category, does the brand still show up?
Peec runs a fixed set of target prompts for each brand and records two separate things: whether the brand is named in the answer, and which sources the answer drew on. We review the results weekly, which gives us three numbers. Reddit retrieval rate is how often Reddit content was used in answering those prompts, whether or not it was cited. Brand visibility is the share of answers that mention the brand at all. Share of voice is the brand's share of all brand mentions in those answers, measured against the competitors tracked on the same prompts.

Week by week, five-brand panel

The same five brands in every week. Bars show average Reddit retrieval rate; the line shows average brand share of voice. Brand visibility stayed between 52% and 56% throughout. The week of August 10 spans the citation drop and is shown for context only.
Reddit retrieval dipped for most brands, but not all. Six fell, by between 20% and 49%, and two rose slightly.
However, brand visibility didn't follow retrieval down for any of them. Share of voice was already climbing before August, so I'm not claiming the August change lifted it, and nothing here proves cause in either direction.
What it does show is that source visibility and brand visibility are different outcomes. A CMO reading only the citation headline is looking at Reddit's credit line. The question that matters for budget is whether buyers asking AI about your category still hear about you, and the GPT citation dip doesn’t appear to have impacted this at all.
How we measured this
Eight client brands, tracked in Peec AI against a fixed set of target prompts per brand. Before: seven complete weeks, June 22–August 9, 2026. After: seven complete weeks, August 17–October 4, 2026. The week of August 10–16 straddles the August 14 citation drop and is excluded from both. Each brand's weekly figures are averaged first, then brands are weighted equally, so no single brand drives the result (50 brand-weeks before, 52 after; a few brands are missing some weeks). Reddit retrieval rate measures Reddit content used in answers, not visible citations, so it isn't directly comparable to Promptwatch's citation share. Brand names are withheld. This is a small, curated client sample with no control group, so the results are descriptive, not causal.
Why does AI keep relying on Reddit?
Reddit remains the internet's richest source of searchable human opinion. Official websites tell an AI system what a product does. Reddit tells it whether people actually like it: the good and the bad, which tradeoffs matter, and why buyers choose one option over another.
The loop runs in both directions. AI reads Reddit to form its answers, and buyers go to Reddit to check those answers. Reddit's own Path to Purchase research, a May 2026 survey of 13,956 US adults cited in its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, found that about half of US shoppers verify AI recommendations on Reddit before they buy.
Until AI finds a better source of constantly updated human experience at this scale, it will continue to need Reddit.
Should CMOs keep investing in Reddit after the ChatGPT citation drop?
If your Reddit strategy was focused solely on manufacturing ChatGPT citations, the ChatGPT citation drop is bad news, at least in the short term.
If your Reddit strategy was built to influence real people, the core investment thesis hasn't changed. The platform's own numbers still point the same way.
Reach. Reddit averaged 514.6 million weekly active uniques in Q2 2026, up 24% year over year (Reddit Q2 2026 results).
Search. The number of people searching Reddit every week grew 30% year over year, according to CEO Steve Huffman on the Q1 2026 earnings call (TechCrunch).
Commercial intent. On the same call, Huffman said 40% of Reddit conversations are commercial in nature.
Validation. In a Reddit and WPP Media study of more than 13,000 Redditors, 77% said they visit two or more communities to validate a purchase decision (Marketing Dive).
Those last three come from Reddit itself, and they should be read that way. But none of them depends on how any single AI product chooses to display its sources.
The part of AI visibility a brand can actually influence sits upstream of citations: what people independently say about you, and where. That's why we built our approach around the mention hierarchy and why it matters for AI citations, rather than around any one model's crediting behavior.
Locking in AI citations was always a knock-on effect of a good Reddit strategy.
What the ChatGPT citation dip changes, and what it doesn't
Brands should be in the business of shaping what people, and the systems informing them, think. In August, one of the ways of seeing that work got noisier. The work itself didn't change.
